Is an elective 3D ultrasound safe?
It's the question almost every parent asks before booking. Here's a straight answer, how the technology actually works, and the standards we hold ourselves to at our Knoxville studio.
The straight answer
Yes. Ultrasound has been used in pregnancy for over thirty years, routine scanning is standard across the United States, and extensive study has not shown ultrasound to cause harm to mother or baby. A 3D or 4D session uses exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound as the conventional 2D scans you have already had.
Sound, not radiation
The probe emits high-frequency sound waves and listens for the echo — the same principle as radar or sonar. There is no ionizing radiation involved at any point.
Same machine, same settings
3D, 4D and HD Live are rendering modes applied to the same returning echoes. Switching to 3D does not turn anything up.
Sensible scan times
Sessions are relaxed but not endless. We scan around 25–30 minutes and spend the rest of your appointment choosing images together.
How ultrasound actually works
A transducer placed on your belly sends pulses of high-frequency sound into the body. Different tissues reflect those pulses back at different times and strengths. The machine measures the returning echoes and builds a picture from them — the same way a ship’s sonar maps the sea floor.
For a 3D image, the machine sweeps through a volume of that echo data and renders the outer surface. For 4D, it does that repeatedly so you see movement. HD Live adds a virtual light source to the render. Every one of those steps happens after the sound has already come back — no extra energy goes into you or your baby to produce them.
What elective imaging is and isn’t
This is the part we want to be very clear about. Our sessions are keepsake and bonding imaging only. We are not a diagnostic facility and we do not perform diagnostic exams, make medical assessments, or evaluate your baby for abnormalities. Realistic surface images create a connection between parents and baby that families treasure — that is the whole purpose of the visit.
Keep every appointment your healthcare provider schedules. An elective session is an addition to that care, never a substitute for it, and anything medical belongs with your provider.

- Does 3D/4D use more energy than a regular ultrasound?
- No. The probe emits the same sound waves and listens for the same echoes. 3D and 4D are software rendering modes applied to that same data, not a stronger or different kind of scan.
- Is there any radiation involved?
- None. Ultrasound is sound, not radiation. A probe sends high-frequency sound waves into the body, listens for the echo and builds an image from the timing of those echoes — the technology is closer to radar or sonar than to an X-ray.
- How long is the scan?
- We schedule 45 minutes for a 3D/4D session and scan for about 25 to 30 of those minutes, using the rest to choose images with you. We keep sessions relaxed and unhurried while still being sensible about scan time.
- Do I need my doctor's permission or a referral?
- No referral is needed. Our sessions are elective keepsake and bonding imaging only. We are not a diagnostic facility, we do not perform diagnostic exams, and nothing we do replaces the care and imaging your healthcare provider gives you.
- What if you see something during my session?
- We do not evaluate, diagnose or comment on medical findings — that is your provider's role, and we always encourage you to keep every appointment they schedule. Our job is to help you meet your baby.
- Is it safe to bring young children and family?
- Yes, and we encourage it. All family and friends are welcome. Our two viewing rooms have large couches and chairs — the small room seats 12 comfortably and more if needed, and the large room holds a lot more.
