How early can you find out gender with a 3D ultrasound?
The short answer: 14 weeks. Here's what's actually visible week by week, how accurate an early gender scan really is, and how to give yourself the best chance of a clear answer on the first try.
The short answer
At Toes to Nose in Knoxville you can find out your baby’s gender starting at 14 weeks, and gender determination is guaranteed. Before 14 weeks, boy and girl anatomy simply hasn’t differentiated enough on ultrasound for anyone to give you a dependable answer — anything earlier is a guess dressed up as a result.
Blood-based tests (NIPT) can indicate chromosomal sex from around 10 weeks, but those are ordered through your healthcare provider. If you want to see your baby and hear that heartbeat while you find out, 14 weeks is your starting line.

How to get a clear answer on the first visit
- Hydrate for a full week beforehand. Amniotic fluid is your window. Start drinking plenty of water about a week before your appointment and keep it up daily — it makes a bigger difference than anything else you can do.
- Book when baby is usually active. Pay attention to the time of day you feel the most movement and schedule then.
- Have something cold and sweet on the way. A fruit smoothie tends to wake babies up and get them shifting position.
- Wear two pieces. Loose, comfortable clothing so your belly is easy to reach without changing.
Making it a reveal, not just an appointment
Plenty of families find out right there on the big screen with everyone in the room. Others ask us to keep it sealed — we write the result down, hand it to a friend or bakery in an envelope, and you find out with confetti later. Either way works, just tell us at the start of the session.
If you’re revealing in studio, we have confetti cannons and balloon pop kits available, and both viewing rooms are set up for a crowd. Our small room seats 12 comfortably (more if needed) and the large room holds a lot more, with big couches and chairs so nobody has to stand. Bring the grandparents, bring the siblings, bring the group chat.
Coming back later for portraits is very common — a 14 to 16 week gender peek, then a 3D/4D session at 26 to 32 weeks when baby’s face is fully filled out. Every session includes free 8K imaging, and we carry heartbeat bears and other keepsakes in studio.

- How accurate is a 14-week gender ultrasound?
- Very accurate when the sonographer gets a clear view. The main variable is baby's position, not the technology. If we cannot get a confident look during your session, we bring you back at no charge until we do — that's what our gender determination guarantee means.
- Is 3D better than 2D for finding out gender?
- Gender is normally confirmed on 2D imaging, which shows the anatomy most clearly. The 3D and HD Live rendering is what makes the visit special — you get sculpted portraits of baby's face along with the answer. Our gender sessions include both 2D and 3D imaging plus heartbeat audio.
- Can a gender ultrasound be wrong?
- Mistakes are rare and almost always come from a poor view — a hand, the cord or a leg in the way — rather than from a misread. Our sonographers will tell you honestly if the view isn't definitive rather than guessing, and bring you back for another look.
- Do I need to be seeing an OB or have a referral?
- No referral is required. Our sessions are elective keepsake and bonding imaging only — we are not a diagnostic facility and do not perform diagnostic exams.
- Can I bring my family to the reveal?
- Absolutely — all family and friends are welcome. We have two viewing rooms with large couches and chairs. Our small room seats 12 comfortably and more if needed, and the large room holds many more, so bring everyone.
