8K vs 5D vs 8D ultrasound
5D, 8K, 8D — studios use a lot of numbers. Here's what each term really means, in plain English, so you know exactly what you're booking.
The short version
There is only one ultrasound machine and one scan. The letters and numbers describe how the images from that scan are rendered. 3D gives you a still sculpted image, 4D adds live motion, and HD Live (often marketed as “5D”) adds a movable light source for warm, lifelike shading. 8K refers to the resolution of that rendering. “8D” is a marketing term — there is no eighth dimension of ultrasound; it almost always means high-resolution HD/8K images.

Which one should you book in Knoxville?
- 6–14 weeks: a 2D heartbeat session is the right call — baby is still too small for meaningful 3D detail.
- 14–22 weeks: great for early gender determination with a quick 3D/4D peek.
- 26–32 weeks: the sweet spot for 3D, 4D and HD Live portraits — enough fat under the skin for lifelike features, and still enough fluid and room to move.
Whichever session you choose, we render in 8K at no extra cost, and you can bring all your family and friends — both of our viewing rooms have big couches and chairs. Sessions are keepsake and bonding imaging only, never diagnostic.
Common questions
- Is 8D ultrasound real?
- Not as a distinct technology. Ultrasound imaging goes 2D, 3D, 4D and then HD Live rendering. “8D” is branding for high-resolution rendered images — essentially what 8K HD Live already gives you.
- Is 5D better than 4D?
- It’s the same live 4D scan with HD Live lighting applied, which makes skin tones and depth look more realistic. Most people prefer the look, and we include it.
- Does higher resolution mean a better picture?
- Resolution helps, but baby’s position, fluid levels and how hydrated you are matter more. Start drinking plenty of water about a week before your appointment for the clearest images.
